Well I don't know about everyone else but I am a big fan of the Legends. They are a great team and all I want them to do is win. Their next opponent in the playoff is Cobble Hill. They might have the leading scorer in the city but if the Legends play hard as a team the W won't be hard. Again, Legends put your game faces on and lets keep making history!!!!!!!!

Great Season Lady Legends!

What a season it has been for Landmark's Lady Legends. They went through good times, and then there were those bad times. But in the end, the girls knew how to stick together and finish the season strong and united.

What an amazing game the girls play last Friday, they had the odds all against them. They were missing their captain, had a cheating ref and had the booing from the opposing fans. But that didn't stop the girls from giving their hardest effort and thats what made them outstanding. I would like to thank the girls for letting me come into the team and allowing me to provide them with my assistance. Though they went through many stuggles this season, one thing is for sure, the girls ended this season stronger and closer to one another and this will be the ending note going into next year. Congratulations again girls for having a strong season!

Well, ladies, basketball season is over, and although we lost the last game of the season, we went out and played the best game of our lives.
i hope you are all proud of yourselves, because i'm sure am proud of you guys and the way you handled yourselves through all the tough times, and when it came down to being serious, you knew just what you had to do. so i just wanted to tell you guys, that you all are my idols, and you have showed me that no matter what, whether you win or lose, team work is the main key because if you've learned how to play as a team you've already won so much more.

March Madness!

With a decisive 76-60 playoff victory over Leadership, the Boys Basketball Team will advance to the second round of the playoffs in early March.

The game started with an evenly played first quarter. After trading the lead back and forth a few times, the Legends slowed it up to take the last shot of the quarter and snatch the lead, 15-14. From there, they never looked back. Great defense and their best passing of the year helped the boys to open up a 39-25 lead by halftime.

The team effort continued in the second half, and the Legends went on to win 76-60. The Legends had 18 assists as a team, and their solid defense and good passing led to a lot of layups. Reggie and Kirk led the scoring with 25 and 17. Gerald, Creighton, and Cecil pitched in for 9, 8, and 8. Creighton and Kirk controlled the boards with 12 rebounds each. Kareem and Reggie played great perimeter defense, and Kirk and Creighton stopped anything that got by them.

The Boys Basketball Team has been seeded 8th out of the 33 teams in the "B" Division Playoffs. Their first round game will be Wednesday, February 16th against #25 seed and conference opponent Leadership. A Salute to the Lady Legends

This Year's Lady Legends overcame many difficulties and rose to the top in my estimation.
Some say its not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. The 2004-05 Lady legends basketball team has shown that the greatest victory is playing as a unit, growing together, and turning 11 personalities into one. "A fist does more damage than ten fingers" an old saying goes, and that is so true with the legends, who grew stronger this year as a unit than the sum of their parts.

As with the boys team, these girls dedicate themselves to working together, despite the odds, such as being in a fine school, but one that the Board of Ed neglected to provide a gym for. So the school must take needed funds to pay to use other people's gyms. We are fortunate to have a principal and asst. principal who value our efforts and give us the needed resources.

The players are able to deal with all the difficutlies in a Landmark season;

They deal with waiting around til 5pm to practice, not getting home til 8pm.

They deal with never having a home court for their games.

They deal with different personalities who all learn to sublimate their needs in order for the greater good.

They learn to cheer even for people who are taking away their playing minutes.

They learn that jobs, family responsibilities, relationships, .... etc, are things that get sacrificed a little in order to put the time into growing and improving on the court.

They learn that the team becomes a second family in many ways.

I thank the veterans for assisting the rookies and new players into our system, teaching them plays, teaching them to run harder, to not fret when mistakes get made, to do push-ups or laps for the good of the team, to trust each other, to play killer "D," to congratulate each other for our successes and to not take themselves too seriously.

I thank the rookies for showing they belong. For staying committed to the larger goal, of improving. Senior year comes up very fast, enjoy the journey in high school, even if it means you don;t play big minutes, your turn will come with effort and committment.

Five years from now none of us will remember the wins or the loses, but we will never forget the relationships with each other. A team is is group of people committed to the same goal, working as one.

Lets all salute the landmark girls team. Thanks for your hard work, your passion for the game, and your love for each other.

Do We Have A Girls Basketball Team Anymore...?

What happened to the girls' basketball team?
I understand that the boys basketball team is doing very good, and that they deserve the publicity, but don't the girls deserve some publicity also? As one of the team members, I am very upset that we don't have anymore articles published in the school website. Although I joined the team late, I have seen a great amount of effort and devotion from all the girls, and I am extremely upset that instead of our tries, it's the number of losses we have that are being recognized.

To Dennis, Mohammed, Josue, Isidro, Khadim, and Andre, thank you for helping us out, but to help us even more you can acknowledge that fact that there IS a girls basketball team and that the wins aren't the only things that mattter.

Legends Finish Strong, Look Forward to Playoffs

The Boys Basketball Team beat Chelsea on Thursday and Leadership on Saturday to finish the year at 15-3, in second place in the Manhattan III-B division.
On Thursday, the Legends travelled uptown to play Chelsea at the JP Kennedy rec center. They jumped out to an early 18-9 lead, but Chelsea made a run in the second half to cut the lead to 3 points. The Legends exploded for a 23 point fourth quarter to put the game away. Creighton had a career-high 18 points to go with his 10 rebounds. Kirk also had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Gerald led the scoring with 21. The final score was 73-61. To see the boxscore, click here.

On Saturday, the Legends finished their regular season against Leadership, who gave us our only loss last season. This time, the boys got off to a slow start. Thanks to 6 turnovers in the first minute and a half, the Legends found themselves down 10-2. After a timeout, they got their momentum back and managed to end the first quarter up 20-17. Saturday was the last regular season game for the Landmark seniors. Cecil (8 pts, 6 rebs), Kirk (10 pts, 11 rebs), Gerald (25 pts), Jose (2 steals), and Mario (2 assists) will attempt to extend their Landmark careers as long as possible when the B Division City Playoffs begin February 15. In the playoffs, you keep playing until you win the championship or you lose, so now the seniors have to play every game like it is their last. Check here.

Legends Win Two This Weekend, Prepare for Showdown Against Undefeated Humanities Next Friday.

The Boys Basketball Team beat Fashion 57-43 on Friday, then beat LaGuardia 74-65 on Saturday to claim sole possession of second place in the Manhattan III-B Division.

On Friday afternoon, the Legends pulled away to a 32-17 halftime lead, and never looked back as they beat Fashion for the second time this season. Creighton, Cecil, and Kirk pulled down a combined 31 rebounds, and Reggie, Gerald, and Creighton combined for 18 assists. Kirk led the scoring with 16, and Reggie had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

Saturday, the Legends headed to Basketball City for a rematch with LaGuardia, one of the two teams that beat us this year. The Legends started strong and were up 39-27 at the half. LaGuardia hit some threes in the third quarter to spark a run and pull within three points. To make matters worse, defensive stopper Creighton fouled out on two consecutive horrible calls. The Legends tightened up their team defense, however, and pulled away for the 74-65 win, avenging a 3 point loss in LaGuardia's gym. Gerald and Cecil led the scoring with 29 and 18. Cecil also had 17 rebounds, and Reggie had 12 assists.

This puts Landmark at 12-2 and in second place with 4 tough games remaining. The biggest of those games will be this Friday against Humanities, who dealt the Legends their first loss in a close one back in December. The Legends are playing great ball right now, and are looking to give Humanities their first loss of the season.

Lady Legends Win Big

The Lady Legends won their second game of the season yesterday with a resounding victory over Graphic Arts 32-20!

Ndeyeda lead all scoring with 21 points followed by Helen with six points and an amazing 15 rebounds! Mellissa and Alyssa were “OoooDeee” on defense. They had four and three steals, respectively. It was a full team effort in our victory. Pierina had two points and 10 rebounds. Kristen had one point, two assists, one rebound and one steal. Ashley tried two shots and one rebound and Ysleni had three rebounds and two steals! In addition to their steals, Mellissa had one assist and one rebound, while Alyssa had two points, one assist, and three rebounds! Good job ladies!

Legends Beat Leadership

The Landmark Boys Basketball Team overcame foul trouble to beat Leadership 61-53 on Monday.

In the third quarter of their game Monday night, the Legends found themselves down 6 points with Kirk on the bench in foul trouble, facing the possibility of their third loss in the last five games. In the first half, it had taken a while to shake off the holiday rust, and they were plagued by turnovers and missed shots. Things were not looking too good.

At that point, however, the Legends picked up their defensive intensity. Kareem was all over Leadership's top scorer, Reggie slowed down their point guard, and Cecil cleaned up the boards. The Legends held Leadership to 8 in the third quarter, then exploded offensively for a 21 point fourth quarter from Gerald, Kirk, and Reggie.

The scoring was led by Gerald (19), Kirk (17), and Cecil (14). Kirk and Cecil each had 11 rebounds, Reggie had 8 assists and Kirk blocked 5 shots. To see the complete boxscore, click here.

Its About That Time Legends

It is time to make a statement in your league. There are some teams that are not giving you respect and they feel like you're just an average team and that is unacceptable. Last year, the team ended the season 17-1 and was selected to play in the Manhattan Borough tournament which selects the top 8 teams in Manhattan. We lost to FDA which is currently ranked in the nation today. With that said, we were seeded number 6 while School of the Future was seeded number 5. All the teams with a seed under 5 must play in a play-in game and if you remember we almost lost the play-in game last year to a good Global Studies team. As a team, everyone needs to come together and let there egos go. Its time to play. You took things for granted and thought it was gonna be a piece of cake and you were gonna run through this season and go without a loss. Take each game a step at a time. Yes, Landmark is the best team in the league but prove it. You can not afford another lost because it will really hurt your seedings. Its time for the leaders to pull the troops together and get the job done. Lets go team work. 1 love to all you Legends, good luck, finish strong.

Those of us who are avid fans of the team but unable to make the games are eagerly awaiting a summary of the last two games. Did they actually play them? Who is this Eric Shold guy who writes up the articles? Did he quit, was he fired? He has a flair for description and capturing the feel of a game - we want him back!!! If he was fired for good reason that we don't know about, maybe that Siu guy could write up the games from now on?

Legends Have Productive Week

Boys basketball team beats MVA 102-67 Friday night, then returns to Basketball City to top Marta Valle 72-53.

Friday night was Landmark's first test as a basketball team this season. After having beaten University Neighborhood and Fashion, the boys faced MVA, a talented and athletic team whom the Legends beat last year in a last-second victory.
The Legends started off well offensively, scoring 26 points in the first quarter, led by 8 from Kirk, 7 from Gerald, and 7 from Reggie. Defensively, they allowed 20 points from MVA, and the game remained close.
In the second and third quarters, the Legends tightened up their defense, cut down on their mistakes, and started to pull away. Kirk closed up the middle of the lane, blocking 6 shots in the game and taking away any easy baskets. Creighton took away the outside game, using his ridiculous vertical leap to block 3 3-pointers and challenge many more. Cecil and Kirk controlled the boards, grabbing 26 rebounds between them.
As the defense improved, Landmark became more confident and MVA became more frustrated. The Legends had never scored 100 points before, and found themselves at 98 with 2 minutes remaining. After many near misses by the team, Nelson scored the 100th, then the 102nd points, giving the Legends their largest point total in school history.
The victory was a great team effort. Reggie helped distribute the ball with 10 assists and Gerald ended up with 33 points. Kirk had 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Cecil grabbed 12 rebounds and had 6 assists. Jose scored 10 points and Kareem got 4 assists. Player of the game honors went to Creighton, for his blocked shots, steals, rebounds, and all-around defensive hustle to help shut down the MVA 3-point shooters. The crowd also played a huge role in inspiring the players- a big thank you to the staff cheering section. To see the box score for this game, click here.
A mere 18 hours later, the Legends were back at Basketball City to face Marta Valle. The game was not as thrilling, but was a solid victory for the Legends, albeit a bizarre one. The game featured several substitutions for wardrobe malfunctions, and an incident in which Marta Valle scored on a free throw, then inbounded the ball themselves and went down to try and score again- on the Legends basket. Oddly, nobody noticed until another foul was called. The Legends started strong, holding Marta Vathe team, Nelson scored the 100th, then the 102nd points, giving the Legends their largest point total in school history.
The victory was a great team effort. Reggie helped distribute the ball with 10 assists and Gerald ended up with 33 points. Kirk had 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Boys Basketball Team beats Fashion HS 75-30.

The Legends used defensive pressure and offensive contributions from everyone to shut down Fashion. Reggie, Jose, Creighton, Kareem, and Alberto took turns frustrating the Fashion guards and never let them get in a rhythm. Cecil and Creighton controlled the boards, and Chayan grabbed some nice rebounds when Kirk got in foul trouble early.

The scoring was led by Cecil and Gerald, but nearly everyone chipped in, as 11 of the Legends scored in the game. To see a complete boxscore for the game, click here.

I just wanted to say good job on the W. I hope you all had fun doing it. I know its tough but its unforgettable, at least it felt that way for me. Remember all it takes is the word togetherness and a lot of practices. In the future you will get more Wins. Oh yeah, when I come and see the games, show it off on the court baby! Big O, whats popping? Whats happening with you? Get everything together because the team needs you. Helen and the others have enough weight! Helen, work on those 3s. I mean you always had them but lets make them better, b/c you got game. I really haven't been playing ball, but I played softball here and there. Nice sh## out there, Ndaba ( you're hungry - lol). Lady Legends Mount Comeback Overtime Victory

A total team effort brings victory home in season opener over Eleanor Roosevelt, 26-23
This was a new look Lady Legends Unit. Helen Deluna at point guard, consistently getting past the defensive pressure and breaking the Lady Legends rebounding record with 30 boards. Ndaba setting the school record in blocked shots with eight, and leading all scorers with 12 points, and finishing with 24 rebounds of her own. Rookie Perina putting the stops to Roosevelts top scorer, who had 11 points in the first six minutes and ended up only scoring three more the entire game, as Perina showed her defensive skills!

--- Kristen also pitched in with five points, but all of them came at crunch time, when the game was on the line. Tenacious Alyssa also stole the ball 5 times and had 8 tipped or deflected passes, as she appeared to harrass any Roosevelt player who entered her world. Also contributing were rookies Shantasia and Anylese. This game also marked the coaching debut of Muhammad, notching a dramatic victory in his first contest, not bad! The legends battled back the entire game and took the lead with seconds left in OT, on a key layup by Kristen and then two clutch foul shots by captain Helen. ---- Although the legends have areas to improve in, they showed heart and fight, battling with only seven players in attendance. The team is awaiting the arrival of Shatrieka and Mellissa,.... and not to mention the almighty Oni!

Legends Open With a Big Victory

The Boys Basketball Team started off the regular season with a 79-48 victory over University Neighborhood. Read this story for details and their upcoming schedule.

The game was close in the first quarter, but the Legends tightened up their defense, allowing only 6 points in the second quarter and pulling away. Gerald and Kirk led the scoring with 25 and 23 points. Kirk also had 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 blocked shots. Cecil chipped in 6 points,12 rebounds, and 4 assists. Creighton and Kareem added 6 and 5 points and some great pressure defense in the second quarter. Reggie got off to a good start with 5 assists in the first half, but rested the second half with a sore ankle. Jose, Chayan, Eliezer, and Seyhan also scored for the Legends. Legends Prepare to Open Regular Season on Monday

After splitting two games at the Banneker Tournament, the Landmark boys basketball team is ready to start their regular season Monday against University Neighborhood at 5:30 at Basketball City.

After a rough start last Saturday losing to host team Banneker, the Legends pulled together as a team and beat Lab Museum United the next day by a score of 63-43. Kirk Miller and Gerald Fieulleteau led the Legends in scoring with 16 each, and Jose Flores had a career-high 11 points. Kirk and Cecil Browning controlled the boards with 14 rebounds each, and Reggie Hilliard had 12 assists. Creighton Raybe and Kareem Cornelius added hustle and great pressure defense.

The Legends are the defending champs of the Manhattan III-B division. Despite losing some key seniors to graduation, they have a solid core returning and several players are steppin up to fill some key roles. They begin their quest for a second consecutive division championship Monday at 5:30 against University Neighborhood.

Dreams Can Come True

Antonio Matos the former Landmark basketball star will be attending Allegany Community College in January which is the same school that produced Steve Francis (Orlando Magic) and Terrel Ross (Texas2002). This fall Antonio has been working hard and will be ready to play next season. Antonio has been working hard on his game the last 4 years and it is starting to pay off. From not having a D1 school recruit him he has now drawn interest from some top programs. Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, and the Universiy of Miami are a few of the schools that are interested. If Antonio can focus on his academics expect to see him playing at one of these schools. All the tears hard work mornings at the gym are paying off now. Antonio's first dream is to play D1 basketball his second dream is to continue after college. His message to all the basketball players is "Work hard on your game and be patient with your improvement. Time will tell how hard you have worked. If you have a dream chase it until its over because thats what I am doing." Good luck to the boys and girls basketball teams this upcoming season.

Pierna made two free throws with one second on the clock in overtime to seal the game for the Lady Legends. Everyone contributed to the win including a clutch shot by Kiesha and an important three pointer by Alyssa down the stretch.

Legends Win Three Straight to Clinch Playoff Spot

Over the past week, the Boys Basketball team has defeated University Neighborhood, Chelsea, and Marta Valle. With their 10-2 record, they are now guaranteed a playoff spot for the second consecutive year.
On Friday afternoon, the Legends faced University Neighborhood for the second time this season. With a little help from everyone on the team, the Legends managed to sweep the series with a 72-65 victory. Kirk Miller led the scoring with 25, followed by Creighton with 10. Eliezer got 4 points, and Greg and Mario each hit three-pointers to help seal the victory. To see the box score, click here.

On Saturday, the Legends returned to Basketball City to face a tough Chelsea team. In a tight game, the Boys were money from the free-throw line down the stretch. Reggie, Kirk, and Cecil were a combined 12 for 16 in the fourth quarter. It was close the whole way, but the Legends did what they needed to do to pull out the 53-51 victory. Tuesday afternoon, the Legends found themselves in hostile territory as they faced Marta Valle in their gym before a cajoling and cacaphonous crowd. Instead of helping Marta Valle, the haters inspired the Legends to one of their best team efforts of the year. Reggie, Kirk, and Gerald all scored in double figures. Jose, Creighton, and Chayan were all close with 8 or 9. Reggie had 8 assists, and Creighton had an absolutely amazing 12 offensive rebounds. wheres our teamwork

recently i have acknowledged that we havent been focusing when we play other schools. at first i thought that maybe it was hard for them to learn plays because it was new to some of the rookies on the team, but they caught on quickly. then i thought maybe since we are just starting this year it might be hard to play. but ive realized that all along right in front of my face that there were tensions involved with the team. usually when a team leaves for practice or for a game they go in together, right? but we dont do that. and instead of applauding each other on our achievements we constantly put each other down in a negative way. now all im asking is for a little team work when we go to a game, practice whatever, because we are landmark, a family of one.
now im not saying that we should stay away from each other because the teansions do grow when we are away. and plus we need a little light, and guidance to the way just like my man mohhamed. just help us out a little more an we know you can be the best coach that we have seen, cause we know dennis aint even trying to help us out. so lets do this legends, cause aint no legends, like the lady legends, cause the lady legends get hype!!!
